Everybody makes mistakes so why get aggravated about yours? Sure you just missed an easy volley that would’ve won you the match but now you have to focus on the current point and forget anything that happened. A former coach of mine once told me that tennis is 90% mental and 10% physical. At first I looked at him like he was crazy, but as I began to play more matches I realized that he was actually right. Many competitive players, and even some professionals, will lose matches purely because they’re upset and pouting over their last mistake. The best thing you can do is “hit and forget”. Even a forehand winner should be forgotten in order to focus on your next point.

In doubles, a lot of people think the winners will end up being the ones who can hit the ball harder with the same consistency as their opponents. Wrong! Doubles is all about placing the ball in the right spot and communication. Many people have pondered the idea of Nadal/Djokovic vs. Bryan/Bryan. The outcome of this match has been tossed back and forth mostly by their own fans. Sure Nadal and Djokovic both have great groundstrokes and serves but they’re no match for the Bryan brothers. Singles and doubles are two completely different games. The reason the Bryan brothers would beat Nadal and Djokovic is because they have a lot of chemistry together, and they have more knowledge of playing doubles. The Bryan brothers know when to attack the net and where to place the ball whilst at the net. These two move so fluidly they probably could beat Nadal and Djokovic without saying one word to one-another. To be successful in doubles you must know what to do with the ball when it comes to you, and what to do after. For more doubles tips come visit us at the club.

Another question that is brought up rather frequently is what snacks or meals should be eaten on match day. A suggestion for this is something that will settle hunger, high in carbohydrates to supply energy and medium in protein, and will be quickly digested. This meal is to be eaten (3-4) hours before a match and an example of this meal could be a turkey or grilled chicken sandwich with mustard, an apple, and a cup of milk and water. 1-2 hours prior to playing you also want to have a snack, the snack should look something like this: fruit yogurt or banana, cup of water, and a Gatorade energy bar. These are just some tips to help get you started.

Number 2 and 3 tennis player in the world, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, have recently made a management move that has been intriguing to most. The two tennis stars have hired former grand slam champions Boris Becker (Djokovic) and Stefan Edberg (Federer). The question is, what do these modern-day superstars want to get out of their new coaches? Djokovic believes that his losses in both Wimbledon and the US Open finals both came from emotional distraught. Becker is said to have one of the strongest competitor’s minds in the game and Djokovic is hoping it rubs off on him. On the other hand Federer has hired what he describes as his “childhood ideal” in hopes that he could help touch up on his net game. Edberg was known for his legendary volleys back in the day and with today’s players hitting their groundstrokes so forcefully, Federer is trying to find an easier way out than to grind out his points with these players that are much younger. Will these former legends have positive impacts on these two players? And will other players start to hire more coaches like these two did?

A big topic of conversation in the tennis world today is whether to use the eastern or semi-western forehand grip. The eastern grip is commonly taught and allows players to hit through the ball more. Although, the semi-western grip is becoming more popular in the sense that it’s easier to generate topspin with the semi-western grip with increases the consistency for the average player. Eastern grips are also known for easier timing in the fact that it doesn’t require as much force to brush up on the ball. A semi-western grip makes you hit up more on the ball which means you need to catch it further in-front of you in order to let your body catch up with your racquet head speed. Either forehand works in modern day tennis, now it’s just a preference that’s up to you and your coach.

Topspin is becoming to most used shot in tennis because of the consistency the spinning force creates. When you hit topspin you are “brushing” up on the back of the ball which produces the spin on the ball that brings it down quickly into the court. To hit topspin you have a closed racquet-face and make sure you’re hitting the ball further in front of your body than you normally would with a flat stroke. The key to hitting topspin is to finish over you shoulder which reminds you to hit up on the back of the ball. Come on down for a lesson on how to hit topspin with one of our pros.
